Five Important Facts of Matka King Ratan Khatri
‘Matka King’
umbai: Ratan Khatri, dubbed as one of the pioneers of betting in India, passed away at the age of 88 on Saturday after a brief illness at his house located in Mumbai Central’s Navjeevan area. He transformed Matka, a form of gambling that originated in Mumbai in 1962, into the nation’s biggest betting racket and controlled it for several decades.
Here are five lesser-known facts about the now-deceased ‘Matka King’:
1. Khatri was born in Karachi, British India
Khatri was born to a Sindhi family in Karachi, British India. He, along with his family, came to Mumbai during the partition in 1947. He was a teenager at that time.
2. Karachi boy becomes India's ‘Matka King’
Khatri began his Matka stint in Mumbaidevi’s Dhanji Street where people used to bet on the opening and closing rates of cotton from the New York Cotton Exchange Market. Gradually, the market grew as more bets and betters poured in. Later, due to a fight over declaration of a winning number and New York Cotton Exchange Market’s five-day schedule in a week, betters started looking for other options. After receiving several requests from friends, Khatri launched his own syndicate for betting. Betters considered his syndicate to be more genuine as he drew chit/ card from matka (pot) in a patron’s presence for deciding the day’s number. Later, his illegal betting network spread beyond Mumbai to the entire country and he controlled it for several years.
3. Khatri was jailed during emergency
During the 21-month period of emergency proclaimed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, Khatri was arrested and put behind the bars. Reportedly, he served out 19 months in prison.
4. Khatri’s Bollywood connection
Khatri co-produced Bollywood film Rangeela Ratan with Ramchanchandra Bhikubhai. Apart from financing the film, he had also acted in it. Actor Prem Nath’s character in 1975 Bollywood thriller Dharmatma was based on Khatri, who also helped in writing the script and dialogues of the film.
